What Does Dubstep Mean to you?

Okay so over a week ago the competition ended. Thanks to everyone for a massive response, we've been swamped looking through them all! Some long some short, some just straight weird, but we finally came to our two winners.

First prize goes to Ashok Velineni for his unique take on Dubstep. To me he answere the question in its entirety leaving one word spare for his name. Submitting the most unique and abstract explanation, for me truely answered what dubstep means to him.

Here's his entry:

"Dubstep, the genre that defies the nuances of genre, is united by only one characteristic – bone jarring bass; an experience that transcends music and speaks directly to the body’s physical and mental state, through the potency of vast volumes of low wave frequencies acting on the brain. Characteristic saw, sine and square waves enter the ear, sending the brain’s synapses firing and releasing large quantities of neurotransmitter substance, inducing a euphoric, meditative state. The experience of listening to dubstep on a large sound system can be likened to feelings of weightlessness; being carried by the phenomenal activity in the air around the body. The air we breathe is full of excitement, heavy and explosive in the lungs, in stark contrast to the minimalism of the sound. Time is distorted while the triviality of everyday life is forgotten as we lose ourselves in the awe of the earth’s physicality which is felt through dubstep.

Dubstep to me is an experience that like many of life’s wonders, cannot be explained with words because it is greater than language - the sounds of dubstep have existed for eternity, before humankind and its language constructs. It’s paradoxical in so many ways that we will never truly understand it. I have only concluded that dubstep, the name coined only recently in the scale of existence, is a triviality, as the sound itself is the earth’s most primal energy that we have only just tapped into. This is the beginning of what science cannot answer."

Second prize goes out to Elliot Hyams, to me Elliot defined Dubstep in its purest form. If the was a bible to dubstep I think this paragraph would defnitely be in it. This is the heads definition of Dubstep.

"Dubstep is more than just a genre. It’s more than just another musical movement. More than the people who claim to have spawned it. More than the sum total of 140 BPM. More than just a night out, more than a wind down with the lads. It can’t be bottled, marketed and regurgitated so that ‘everyone else can understand.’ Dubstep is not a mantra, it’s not a fashion that can be put on and taken off. Dubstep does not start at 8 pm and end at 3 am. It doesn’t belong to some lost, misunderstood alienated youth. Dubstep is not Jesus in a pair of headphones.

Dubstep is everything, a thought, a breath, a step towards something bigger. A shared moment of ecstasy with a room full of friends and strangers. Ecstasy based on beats rather than chemicals, joy taken from basslines and synths not some desire to have the best image or look. Dubstep is real. It doesn’t need divisions and taglines: black, white, rich, poor, rude, Chav, London, Bristol. No one owns Dubstep. It is a moment, a loud cheer on the dance floor when the bass drops and everything that is and isn’t just melts away. "
