RSS, Readers and Flipboard

Yes, I'm late to the party but a few months ago I finally embraced RSS & Google Reader and its made keeping up to date with blogs and online magazines so much easier.

I'm sure a lot of our readers are already fully integrated when it comes to RSS, but for those who aren't, I'll explain. RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication" and it saves you from trawling through various blogs, tumblrs, online magazines and anything with a feed by keeping them in one handy place and letting you know when they have new content. (A perfect way to stay up to date with BNTL)

It all looks like this:

Once you've set up all your subscriptions, you can get an app to use your account on your iPhone, iPad or even a HTC. I found Feeddler to be the best and syncs directly with Google Reader:

Finally, Flipboard which has been available on the iPad for sometime has now made the switch to iPhone and essentially lets you create your own personal magazine of all your feeds. Flipboard doesn't just integrate with your Google Reader account but also; Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter and Facebook.

It also has feeds for sites like Hypebeast, Cool Hunting, The Satorialist, The Burning House and many other popular blogs. There are also feeds for The Guardian, BBC News, Sport and Editors Picks. You have all your feeds at your finger tips and Flipboard makes flicking through them a joy.

Undercover for Uniqlo

Not much hype surrounding the first look at the debut collaboration between Japanese staple brand Undercover and peoples favourite Uniqlo. From looking at the images I can understand why there's no sky banners hyping up the drop. The two-piece shorts and t-shirt combo on the kid with the Undercover logo (see first pic below) looks fresh but other than that the collection looks straight normal...

Dank Magazine - issue 2

Over the weekend, my copy of Dank Magazine came through. I've been pretty excited about this publication from when I first came across it in this months Monocle, and I must say it definitely lives up to the high expectations I had. Good design, good photography and easy reading.

I won't sit here and lie to you, I am no skate head nor have I ever bought a skate orientated publication before, but I am sure this magazine would be a great read for any skateboard enthusiast out there.

At £10 a copy it may seem a tad bit steep, but seeing as they release a issue twice a year I'd say it was worth it.

Can't front, I haven't been the biggest fan of the last couple of converse X missoni drops. Fruity colourways and bait patterns just haven't been able top their a/w 2010 drop or original drops in 2009.

But this time I can't say a bad word about these badboys I came across a couple of weeks back thanks to the Tres Bien Instagram page. Sick is not the word!

The ever consistent boys at Oi Polloi have dropped one of the best Clarks Wallabee collabs to date. Choosing to use the best materials and colours over messing with the panels. I would have loved to see a mid top version but the shoe as a silhouette seems synonymous with the Manchester look. The Wasabi colourway is a winner...

"When tasked with creating a variation on one of our favourite shoes, we were initially stumped. How to improve on a design as classic as the Clarks Wallabee? Something special was in order — ‘Unicorn Leather‘ — the name given to elk hides by the specialist tannery tasked with producing the raw materials. As with all deer and antelope skins, the resulting leather is naturally very soft. When using hides from wild animals, there are always plenty of scars and scratches on the leather. The tannery have rightly made a feature of this natural quality, accentuating it with the use of aniline dye. Aniline dyed leathers are tumbled for up to 12 hours, in order to enhance the subtle variations of each hide and ensure a vibrant colour."

Men's File Pop Up on Lambs Conduit St.

If you haven't been over to Lamb's Conduit St in Bloomsbury, it's worth a visit. A classic pedestrian thoroughfare of shops and eateries with some great stores along the way. Home to both Folk menswear and womenswear shops and Oliver Spencer amongst others it's worth a visit. Two new additions have arrived, Men's File have filled the Cube PR space and Private White VC have set up shop there permanently as well. Now on it's sixth issue, Men's File isn't a fad "heritage" mag. It'll be around long after the high street flirts with tailoring and classic outerwear silhouettes. It's worth a read, featuring great photography and if you like motorbikes and vintage cars it'll tick those boxes for you as well. With a nice little pop-up housing the likes of Buzz Rickson and Lewis Leathers, stop by it's open for another week or so.

Adidas Archive Team GB Originals Collection

A reworking from the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1984, the Adidas Originals team have pulled together a great collection of six pieces of apparel and three pieces of footwear. Daily Thompson is the lead for this line with 398 Jersey the centre-piece as a reworked T-Shirt.

The footwear really stands out with three classic indoor styles, the Gazelle, the Tobacco and the Handball 5 Plug, all in retro GB colourways. The Handball 5 plug is the standout for me and I partickuarly like the addition of the Union Jack on the insole.

Dropping in February at all the usual spots. Six months till the Olympics and I expect Adidas to come correct, with an unrivalled heritage having sponsored Team GB for god knows how long. If anyone does heritage sportswear well it's always been Adidas. Shout out to Charlie for the heads up and inviting us down to breakfast this am.

Strictly for wearing - Streetwear Retrospective

I think this was one of the last real great pieces that came from Futura and Maharishi/Unkle. I was never really into the Unkle thing but don't get me wrong though, Mo Wax was one of the most important record labels the UK has produced but by the time it went Unkle I think most true headz had moved on.

The jacket below was a true classic and a real highlight for British Streetwear. It was on the edge of what Streetwear was and what it was becoming. This jacket still felt like it has been made for and by the military but it carried the symbols of a cult movement. It was to be worn whilst painting and not to be treated as a piece of artwork in its self. I think this is really important because Streetwear was born out of function which created the blueprint for the look.

Now Nike paint brown stuff on there trainers to make them look old, the brown stuff doesn't make the trainers function any better its just a short cut to a look. It's a shame the dirt on your trainers would once tell a personal story of where they have been, like the paint on your jacket would show that you were an active member of street culture.

Through working with new art, design and fashion talent VV Vintage is unique in being able to put together exclusive lines from emerging talents as well as bespoke customized pieces. (please note they stock menswear, as well as women's)

VV Vintage allows customers to participate and purchase across a number of alternative platforms outside of the shop. One of them being DWO (Design with Oxfam), which is an Oxfam endorsed program where emerging talent will customize and up cycle pieces donated by Oxfam.

I have been a long time admirer of the blog History is Made at Night. As chin stroking as this sounds, I'm interested in the discourse surrounding youth culture and dance music, this is a pretty great blog aimed at that sort of thing. Recently they tweeted out a link to Transpontine a blog on South East London. As they posted about the Deptford Urban Free Festival in 1992. Deptford not too disimilar to now, use to attract an assortment of punks and freaks who would converge on Fordham Park for a free festival dating back to 1989. Transpontine dug out these great images from the event in 92.

If you're into this sort of documentation I can't recommend The Face's collection of club writing 'Night Fever' edited by Richard Benson highly enough.

Words of Wisdom is the second exhibition from the W Project, scheduled again to coincide with International Women’s Day.

Aiming to celebrate, connect and inspire women working across the creative industries, and provide a platform for sharing knowledge, we are inviting an exciting mix of female talent to contribute a creative response to the question: what are your words of wisdom?

Participants have been asked to express their wise words on a postcard in the medium of their choice – anything from screenprinting and collage to pencil and biro. This collection of mini-artworks will then be displayed side-by-side to form a wall of knowledge, and give visitors to the show a unique snapshot of female creative insight in 2012. We hope that by completing their words of wisdom, contributors may inspire others and add something special to discussions about women in society, their working roles, lives and opportunities.

The exhibition opens with a private view on the 8th of March 2012 at The KK Outlet in London. Events taking place alongside the exhibition include a symposium dinner featuring talks by women who have succeeded in their creative field, a film screening and a youth workshop.

Last year’s event was a huge success, so if you missed out before, try and join us this year and gain some insights and inspiration!

I came across this guy on Friday night and ever since I been mad hyped on his stuff. Listening and looking at Canya's material, its pretty easy to come to the conclusion his pretty much a carbon copy of DOOM. But I can honestly say "I ain't mad at dude".
Anybody whose been a solid fan of MF DOOM over the years especially the Special Herbs series, will love Canya's Reial's work. Check out vol 2 and 4 of his, Special Weedz series.

This week my Monday morning browsing took me to http://annyas.com/screenshots/ - a great repository of film title screenshots. A nice way to ease your way into the working schedule again over a cup of coffee. For the graphic designers out there this might be a bit much given the sheer amount of ascenders, descenders and kerning to over analyse, a typographic overload. For the rest of us though, it's simply a nice place to immerse yourself.

So much can be told within the title of a film, I've picked a personal favourites below including one by Saul Bass - the progenitor of the film title.

Where are you from? Where are you living?

Living in Whitechapel, E1 but born in Carshalton and grew up in Morden. Surrey/London Boroughs.

Describe the music you play?

Isn't that your job though? I play it, you write it!

Ok. imagine I'm a fisherman and you and me are in a boat. I dive down off the side. I'm gone a while. Eventually, I bring you up a clam. Inside it is a pearl. It's that.

Who are you down with? Who do you rep?

I play on NTS Radio, every Saturday 4-6pm. The station has a real vibe with so many great DJs and shows - Marsha and Charlie Bones on the breakfast shows. Boilerroom crew on Sunday nights, Meandyou for straight house music and PipeDown for more upsetting stuff. Musically, it's a great gauge for what is happening in London at any given time. But there's also a real emphasis on broadening the audience's horizons, so it's not just music - NTS broadcasts interviews and discussions - it's culture and community.

I've been kicking about with Standard Place crew since the House Party days. Oneman, Reecha, ASBO, Barclay, Billy and Co. We underwent a revival over the past 18 months, which has been great fun - parties, Boilerroom sessions, and a few warehouse jams. It's a DJ thing rather than a producer thing, and isn't tied to any genre. Plus it's always nice to be get down with friends & family, in an intimate setting.

The roots of both NTS and SP has been Plastic People though: I first met Oneman there in the early FWD>> days and Mr Wonderful aka Femi (Founder of NTS) was a resident on the Saturdays when I later worked the bar. We were basically spoiled rotten at that club: the attention to the sound system, the space and the vibe. Everyone whose life has been touched by that place can say they have something in common. So respect to Ade, Floss Daily, Charlotte and Bernard for that.

What was the first tune of the last set you played?

That would be Tuff Jam - Feel My Love.

Tell us about your latest project's?

My Winter Mixtape is about to drop - a studio mix to bump in the colder months. I don't often do studio mixes (probably 2 or 3 ever) but the intention is to put something out there with more staying power than a radio shows or a club set, which tend to be tied to a specific time and place.

I'm working with a photographer to put together artwork to accompany my mixes. Serena Noorani, she's not very well known, but she's super talented. She still works a lot using film and is adept with colour processing techniques, so her aesthetic will complement my sound perfectly.

Reecha and I also run a label together, Lightworks and we're putting together music for that. Last year was a lot of parties and DJing, so this year we're putting more work into that.

Favorite tunes to play out in the past few months ?

On radio, Bullion's mini LP - You Drive Me to Plastic (Young Turks) It's just ridiculous, drawing on everything from prog-rock to folk and avant garde electronics. And the etched vinyl is a piece of art.

Mingi - Sherehekeya. Another stunner, so unique, and people always ask me what it is. A Maurice Fulton production, no less.

I got to say Jam City, Waterworx EP too. Shout to the Night Slugs gang, they don't mess about.

And more recently, Eightfold Path by Desto and Jimi Tenor. It's on the flip of the latest 502 Recordings. Shimmery oldschool dubstep Horsepower vibes.

Favorite item of clothing you own?

I picked up a Missoni tie the other week for fiver. It's beautiful. I don't even wear ties that much... but when I do, it'll be Missoni.

Footwear, I'm wearing a pair of Nike Air Max 180s. I run in them but someone actually stopped me in the street and was like "you shouldn't get them dirty bruv"

Wtf is that about I do not know. Your kicks touch the ground. The ground is dirty. Deal with it. People obsessed with keeping pristine trainers do strike me as slightly mentally ill.

Your five needs to get high on life?

Increasingly, a soundcheck. I absolutely love playing records to people, but a lot of clubs don't look after their gear, so I need to get down there beforehand to make sure things are nice.

And food made with love. Don't insult yourself and others with crap.

Sharing good food and good sound, that's it really.

Favorite meal?

Breakfast. Get that right and you're flying.

Drink of choice?

Capri Sun, any day of the week. Cherry if they have it.

Alcoholic? Polish beer.

Or if it's a posh joint, a gin martini. With an olive in it.

Is it better Never, than Late?

My timekeeping is erratic, at best. So late is better than never.

Everything from acid house, garage and jungle through to boogie, electro and rare groove, but my number one rule is that I only play stuff that I love from the bottom of my heart. I’m really fussy. Sometimes I’ll be on Discogs checking out music for five hours and only buy three records.

Who are you down with? Who do you rep?

Rinse FM. I have a weekly show every Thursday night/Friday morning from 03:00 - 05:00 GMT. I would die for Rinse FM. Okay, I wouldn't actually die for it, that's a little melodramatic. But, yeah, I love my show.

What was the first tune of the last set you played?

'Aftermath' by Nightmares on Wax on Warp Records. Pure orgasm-inducing bass. Well that's what my adoring male groupies tell me anyway.

Tell us about your latest projects?

Radio’s my newest project – I only started my show in May. Coming up with two hours of sick new (but mainly old) music week after week is an amazing challenge, and then to get people from the UK and Europe right through to the US and Australia tuning in, downloading the podcasts and appreciating the vibes is the best.

Favourite tune to play out in the past few months?

I'll give you a clue: it's not Drake.

Favourite item of clothing you own?

I've had a camouflage fetish for over ten years now and my absolute favourite item of clothing in the entire universe has to be my Maharishi bonsai forest print sweat pants. Bury me in those babies. When I'm dead, I mean. Don't try and bury me alive or any shit like that.

Shouts out to Chris Read, never not working. For his latest project he has produced a series of short videos for hypebeast tv, focusing on Modern Day Artisans. In the first episode the spot light is on uk based shoe maker Sebastian Tarek.

Focusing less on what he refers to as the “economy” of shoemaking, Australian-born shoemaker Sebastian Tarek sits down with HBTV to discuss his disposition toward the design process, client interaction and overall personalized experience of his bespoke footwear creation process. What initially began as a curious hobby for the London-based designer has now developed into a highly revered trade in which Tarek personally meets each client to individualize every pair of shoes that he makes. Approaching each step within the design process with a degree of fluidity and precision not often experienced, Sebastian Tarek is a strong reminder of the appreciation and respect that is due, yet rarely attributed to, the handful of remaining modern day artisans.

Dank Magazine - issue 2

I came across this interesting Skate board magazine titled Dank, whilst looking through febuary's issue of monocle magazine.
I haven't had the pleasure of having a butcher through a copy just yet, but from just the info on the website I'd say its a must pick up.

Dank is an independent skateboard magazine from Oslo, Norway. The magazine was founded in 2010 by three friends brought together by a shared passion for skateboarding and print media.

Dank is a collaborative effort by graphic designer Jørn Aagaard, assistant editor Aksel Overskott and editor-in-chief Eirik Traavik. The project started in fall 2009, when we were all fed up with reading for exams and began to play with the thought of making a gritty fanzine about skating. We’d all skated for over ten years, and were working in journalism and graphic design on a freelance basis when not studying. We thought it could be a fun project to work on, and figured that the zine would provide an excellent excuse to throw a couple of releaseparties.

Dank #2 features interviews with Jon Kåre Skiple, Jan Henrik Kongstein, Nestor Judkins, Chad Muska, Greg Hunt, and Vivien Feil and Soy Panday of Magenta Skateboards. The second issue has also got extensive photo sections, as well as stories on Tyler, the Creator and up-and-coming Norwegian band Young Dreams. All issues sold through the Dank Store come with a supplement made exclusively for international readers, featuring English translations of all the stories.

SOPA and PIPA are being portrayed as bills designed to stop copyright infringement but it comes as no surprise that they are attacks on the free expression of the internet.

The internet is a free global source. It's the medium which has joined people across the world. It was designed to be a more democratic, widely available, communicative tool. It is but a shadow of its former incarnation - littered with ads etc. - but these laws implemented by one nation state effect the whole world and our way of using this powerful medium.

Maharishi - Vintage WW2 Parachute Cloth

Recycled military uniform is all the rage but what about recycled and blessed military uniform? Yeah, Hardy Blechman is still a camoflague don.

"Recycled military surplus has always been a permanent feature of Maharishi’s mainline collection, including vintage surplus items that are recut and updated with accessory and cord systems. These processes are carried out in India, where the clothing is smudged with herbal incense, blessed, and washed in saffron water to symbolically cleanse it of its military associations. This season's pieces are individually cut from vintage used WW2 US Army parachutes, that were previously used in an art installation by Hardy Blechman at Riflemaker back in 1997."

Everybody's friend Chris Amfo-Okoampah, recently had the pleasure of being interviewed for Topman GENERATION - issue 2. For those not familiar with T.G it's basically a a online magazine curated by Topman covering a wide array of modern day pop culture.

Topman GENERATION: How and when did you first get into styling?
Chris Amfo-Okoampah: I guess it all came about by being in photoshoots but as a model. Not with an agency or anything, but I was more of a quirky street cast, and I’ve always had an interest in fashion of course. So I guess from being involved in photoshoots I wanted to have my own input, not just as a model, and actually be the one who does the clothes as well and create an image. So that came round the time I was around eighteen and I was working at A Bathing Ape, through there I got to meet a lot of interesting people, editors, stylists and photographers. I guess through working with them and modelling and stuff when it came to me wanting do things it all came quite organically.

Shout out to my boy ItsNate, always on a grind with his music movements. He recently sat down with the good folks over at MTV online, to talk about his music, influences and much more.

The Wrap Up: So, Nate, how did you actually get into rapping?
ItsNate: I started off MCing when I was about 14. I had a crew, Keeping it North, and it was all of the boys from Holloway and couple from Finsbury Park, and I used to go and MC at Axe FM back in the day. But then my boy, who kind of started it, his DJ died and that was all mad, so I stopped MCing. I lost a lot of love for it because, when I was spitting, I liked MCs like Dizzee Rascal, Kano and Wiley, who had proper lyrics, but then this whole 'reload culture' came in and it was a lot of screaming bars and getting wheels – it just didn't stimulate me enough.
