24 Hour Party People

I've not done a movie review for a minute but for the last few weeks i've been hitting the films hard. Had to get off the 'dark' film tip, was all getting a bit too depressing.

One of the stand out films i've recently watched is '24 Hour Party People'. One of those films you should really have watched by now.

24hour

This Micheal Winterbottom film is basically an introduction/guide to the eighties music scene that came out of Manchester and cemented itself as one of the biggest cultural movements in British music history.

The film follows the late great Tony Wilson (i can now say that from a kind of informed opinion). From his TV presenting days to his launch of the world famous Factory Records and the legendary Hacienda night club.

Steve Coogan takes on the roll of Mr Wilson and his performance gives a great account of the troubles he faced when looking after Joy Division, New Order and The Happy Mondays. You also get a really good insight into all the characters involved making Manchester 'Mad-Chester'. In places the film is very funny but it also touches on some very sad times for the people of the scene.

Growing up listening to pretty much exclusively Hip Hop and Garage I feel I missed out on some of the great bands from this era. '24 Hour Party People' is a great place to start. I now know why the Hacienda had to close and where the name Joy Division came from.

Check the trailer....

This brings me nicely onto the next GOT GOT NEED which is on Friday 24th July, join the facebook event here.
