The Sun has been out teasing us with a few glimpses over the last few days, but please don't get carried away and think this means the summer is here its just a taster of things to come hopefully.
The weather might be crap but the shoe releases are still coming thick and fast.
For this post the 'boat' shoe will again feature. Personally I'm not sold on what was the hottest shoe of summer '08. I copped this pair of Sebago's (debatedly the original deck shoe) early last year and they only saw a few choice outings.
Reason being is that my legs were built for speed not for 'boat shoes', I haven't really got the ankles for them. The other reason is seeing boys rock these in December in the pouring rain with no socks. You guys are brave but I understand why you do it....you were just after that real boating experience right?
I'm not convinced with all the talk that the 'boat shoe' will dominate again this summer. But a few shoe releases from two brands I tip for big things this year have definitely raised the bar. Firstly Vans kept it classic last year with these
I wasn't a huge fan, I felt the mid-sole was way to thick to be matched with the boat shoe style upper. But Vans being Vans have come more than correct with this release. The Chukka Del Barco...
Available from Urban Industries from August.
Next up is Converse with the Sea Star...
Again not much here for me personally but they teamed up with Staple to bring us this gem. The Converse X Staple Sea Star Hi 'Pigeon'..
I believe these are available at Colette.
Its a toss up between Sea Star Hi and the Chukka Del Barco both shoes have everything I look for...minimal fuss, clean shape and still very casual.
You could say both of these offerings are not boat shoes. What defines a boat shoe? They both have the moccasin style front and the lace eyelets so am I correct in calling them boat shoes? Boating enthusiast please get in touch.
Your thought on the shoes?

staples are avalible at dsm i think
didn't see Kanye's 'boat' shoe in the mix there......predictable and boring yes...(like many 'boat' shoe adaptation's) but it was rather nice....like i wear these on my pimpin' yatch nice
Safe Ronny, i wouldnt mind trying them on. I've seen a pic with someone wearing them and they dont look that great.
Im not following anything Kanye is involved in. Fully bored of him.
http://www.whoresneverlearn.com/2009/02/land-lubbers.html Converse stepped into the arena with these clean ass cakes.
I just pray they are not a JPN only exclusive, that would suck toad balls.
If boat shoes are your bag the three best imo are :
"Vans Chukka Del Barco X proper"/
"Patent sperry boat shoes"/
"Visvim Hockney"
Marks & Spencers for the deck shoe, straight old man steeeeez.
Sperries are nice so are visvims albeit a tad expensive.
"I haven't really got the ankles for them"
Dun know those ankles are straight sex.
How about the Paraboot X Edifice – Birth Deck Shoes... http://www.freshnessmag.com/v4/2009/02/24/paraboot-edifice-exclusive-birth/
or the Vans Zapato Del Barco... http://www.urbanindustry.co.uk/products/product.asp?func=show&id=60754
and also the Lavin deck shoe's that I just peeped on Hypebeast ... http://hypebeast.com/2009/02/lanvin-deck-shoes/
Wouldn't say that they'd be my normal choice of shoe, but am coming round to them.
yeah i tried the vans zapato del barco last summer, i had pretty high hopes for 'em but you're definitely right about the proportion of mid sole to the upper - it just felt wack... the chukka del barcos look well nice though.
amen to the M&S shout
I agree with the old man comment... I'm not sure anymore about trainerised adaptation of boat shoes. The sole is way too thick. I think they look better unaltered. Those Sebago's are v.nice
Following a reckless rinsing of the boat last year at the feets of Shoreditch's twats you'd be pretty foolhardy to don a pair of trad boats imho. The green sebagos are murder all the same...
The Vans Takas (as pictured) come in a mean blue & sienna c.way that pops but there's another shoe in the Taka range that really floats my boat (I forget the style name). Watch DSM and Imperious Rex for more info come August. Keep it coming Danger

^ The aforementioned c.way
hockneys are exxy, but nothing will come close comfort wise(no socks ftw). the folk f.i.l. exclusives from last yr made out of calf leather are a testament to that.

if you were quick there were about 6 pairs of hockneys at the hideout visvim sample sale for 90squid.
those staple atrocities need to be buried.
'they only saw a few choice outings.'
Hah.
Green sebagos all day...classic original look...I think the classic leather with the white sole will always be the best choice...but...the vans del barco's are still on point. Id say either 1 of the 2.
green sperry's all day
