It's the 8th of Dilla February: dough-caine is a hell of a drug.
Day 8, Song 8:
1st Down - A Day Wit The Homies (Produced by Jay Dee)
Every day I've intended to do more than just feed fuel to your core, but nourish thy squishy skull contents. Yes, I'm here to educate my brothers and sisters. And like any respectable (university) lecturer, what am I going to do today? Tell you to read some shit I found on Wikipedia and go home. Worth the £3,070 annual fee for your supposed higher learning? Nah, here's some lower learning for the bureaucrats: suck...............out.
"1st Down was a group consisting of Jay Dee, and Phat Kat.
The duo signed to Payday Records in 1995, and released one 12", "A Day Wit' The Homies", before disbanding as a group, due to label trouble. They once again reunited for Phat Kat's Dedication to the Suckers EP, in 1999, which was produced entirely by Jay Dee. Some of their further collaborations can be found on Slum Village's Fan-Tas-Tic (Vol. 1), Jay Dee's Welcome 2 Detroit, and both of Phat Kat's solo albums, The Undeniable LP and Carte Blanche.

I adore the effervescent funk-step of this beat & Kat's enunciation, reminiscent of that breezy, buoyant mid-90s Westcoast/Midwest flow. It's makes me wanna sip sunshine & smirk at all the girls. Cannot wait for Summer. The mind needs evasion from the cold.
Still, I almost missed dispensing todays delectable delicacy. After a mesmeric night at The Lookout's J-Dilla Tribute party, followed by a boyed-off nightshift that I decided to turn up for at 4am (anti-Capitalist rebel flex), followed by an arrival home to my cherished love-stained mattress at 9am- I awoke from hibernation moments ago like a vampire wanting a virgin. I feel mad groggy with insatiable thirst, thus please forgive me if I let my photographs articulate more coherently on my behalf today:
Last night's party: The Lookout presents...Turn It Up (A Celebration for J-Dilla) @ Favela Chic. Did you miss it? It better of been avian bird flu, bitches. Here's how they managed to raise over £600 for the Lupus UK charity, with style & grace & all the ladies in the place...
Remember that little yutes voice that used to come on after the final credits of The X-Files? "I made this!".
Queens n' dem. Much love to The Lookout events organiser Amelia & equally ambrosial sister Katy.
Hol' tight David J with the crazy flow Dilla tibute raps- we felt you, we felt you, with assistance from Michael D in the back with 2 hands on the wives (as he refers to his decks).
The papparazzi competition + devious smirk that might need some Ike Turner domesticating. Hol' tight Maya.
Hol' tight Lingo 'Electric' Scott, making sunglasses in clubs almost acceptable.
Hol' tight this fella for the grandmaster chirpse techniques: enlightening one on the night that commenting on a girl's SLR camera is the way to her mushy little heart. You're clearly gettin' more than I am.
Hol' tight The Lookout host Paz + rather enormous hand that could bitch-slap a yeti.
Hol' tight one of London's greatest disc jockeys & Lookout resident droppin' a pure potassium set last night: Alexander Nut. J-Dilla (+ Pornography) saved our lives. Check Peanut out on Rinse FM online, Saturdays 1 till 3pm, duke's selection of sounds is untouchable (and that's coming from me yo!).
Did you miss the mystery suprise? The Lookout x 50 boxes of Krispy Kremes Original Glazed. Feel like a right negligent twat now ay?
The place transformed into a village from Black Hawk Down. Feed them before they perish! Hol' tight Nicole + Joel Drumatix + Armshouse Chick + The UN dropping supplies to the militants in the back.
Who let this monster into the party? Hol' tight my dawg-o-nut, Viv alias DJ Cavalry displaying the underlying intentions for his attendance.
After Viv consumed his 23rd donut & took 3 bites out of mine, I was trying to subtly convey to the camera that supplies were runnin' low...
Like you wouldn't want HER to feed YOU? Mmm-mmm-mmm.
Hol' tight unsuccessful customisation skills + "And What Blud?" threatening body language.
Hol' tight Walter a.k.a. 'Big Walt from The D'- the only guy who actually WAS from Detroit last night. Erm... can't you tell?
Hol' tight O.G. Darren + lady friend gettin' held even tighter to ward off potential inferior scene-kid aggressors that wanna acquire infinite cool-points for dating an oriental chick. (Controversial?) Nah sons, dowhatchulike.
Hol' tight my friends from the endz, day-dot disciples, K Master Flash + Maliha + Jordy Toker.
Hol' tight Miss. T, I've finally fuckin' found you baby- but is it too late? Will the Lou Reed 'Perfect Day' never stop playing?
Hol' tight Josephine (no, not like the drug-addled hooker from the Hi-Tek + Ghostface joint)- too beautiful to be seen, captured in mid-bogle. Check out her frequent posts on WAH!, I don't know weather she has an job or not, but she's the goddamn funniest blogger out there- BNTL seal of approval.
DJ Cavalry droppin' another magnanimous set x rice-paper Krispy Kreme attendant's hat, that I stole for him, and the bastard won best Dilla inspired outfit of the night!
At 11.30 it officially hit Pentecostal church levels- 'Raise It Up' was the sermon.
"When I'm doing it, there's no pain, no nothing, just connections"- The Prophet Yancey.
The next Lookout, the capital's biggest mid-week Hip-Hop/Soul showcase & party night, is gonna be another mighty marvel. For the 27th of Feb they're flying in one of the most renowned underground MCs in the States, the man himself Oddisee (down with Kev Brown, Ken Starr, Low Budget crew, the whole Washington scene) is headlining with a live P.A. And our kid Viv alias DJ Cavalry will be in-house once again to bless your booties with the bounce, alongside the other roster of major players. Oh & here's a little secret... Lookout vs. Chaingang night, Weds 19th March. Same place, Favela Chic. I'ma see you there youngn's.
