'Free Drinks On The House'

Juju and Psycho Les are a Latino duo known to most as The Beatnuts. Throughout their musical career they have released multiple albums of varying success, collaborated with some of the most influential rappers in the hip-hop industry and most recently have stared in a semi-biographical stage show production called ‘Deez Nuts’ written by fellow Queens inhabitant Sacha Jenkins.

beatnuts

There isn’t a particular reason for this post other than the fact that I have always been a fan of The Beatnuts and I felt like drawing upon some of the great releases and achievements that they have had during their career that perhaps aren’t always acknowledged by the vast majority.

Starting out originally with three members, the other being Al’Tariq known then as Kool Fashion, The Beatnuts gained their name from The Jungle Brothers who claimed that due to their humorous characteristics they would be better known as The Beatnuts instead of The Beat Kings.

They kicked things off with the production of two tracks for the Stereo MCs in 1990 and moved on over the next few years with production for other big names such as Common and Chi-Ali. For a period of time they had a reputation as being remix specialists, remixing songs for Naughty by Nature and MC Lyte to mention a few. Possibly some might think they should have stuck at it and focussed more of their attention on production.

Some might say the rest of their career from this point onwards wasn’t always extremely successful and numerous albums that they released failed to even reach Billboard Top 200. However what can be said about The Beatnuts is that with the tracks that they released and received positive feedback from, stand out as possibly some of the biggest tunes in hip-hop history. This is to say that production and beat wise they definitely outshine a great deal, however at the same time their lyrical dominance is somewhat lacking.

There is definitely hope that The Beatnuts may continue to flourish in their beat creation expertise and persist with the experimentation of their provocative style of production that they have been known for in the past.

MAJOR LAZER!

Yet another massive night for Barry at the Rainbow Warehouse, the hype over Major Lazer before the event was unreal!

Favourite set for me had to be L-Vis 1990 with top selection but as 1 o'clock came so did Major Lazor. The crowd went nuts and without an inch to move people errupted onto the stage half way through!

Massive sets from Tomb Crew, Jack Beats & Toddla-T followed. The fat boy did it again!
