Daily Play

 

On Friday, Article 31.1 kicked off the the London Festival of Architecture with an exhibition in Workshop 44, a converted shop on The Regents Estate (Catch the flicks soon). This coming Sunday, Article 31.1 will be moving to Weavers Field in Bethnal Green. 

For one day only Weavers Adventure Playground is opening its doors - in the spirit of The Universal Right to Play - to everyone.

The playground, with a brand new 7-a-side 3G football pitch and two giant trampolines will be host to an array of events, workshops and games.

You may do a back-flip then move up to jumping off the structures with the guys from Parkour Generations, design and fly a kite, high, (in both senses) with Community Kite Project. You could bring a team to take man on on the pitch, refine that serve over the table tennis tables or choose to chill out on the swings all day. Whatever you feel doing, you can do. This is our city and our playground.

Music will be played loud, courtesy of Smokey and Timzed, so expect the soundtrack to the day to be composed of bangers. 

You never know, their might be a little drink there too.

PRIVATE VIEW #3 - Changing Space

 Things always change, and so does SPACE, so…Changing Spaces…Specifically, galleries.

Lets get the ball rolling. Here are some construction photos of the Wilkinson gallery when it was being built in 2007. 

 

 

The gallery started out in the director’s living room, so things have definitely changed with regards to this space, unless his house had 20foot black matte doors and a hatch in the roof to move large works around the building!?

2000: Spring Serpentine Party @ Serpentine Gallery

Just blowing up the Serpentine. This invite came with a scratch and sniff card, we tried it out, and ten years later it still smelt like freshly cut grass. Some things don’t change.

The White Cube have definitely got more technologically advanced over the years. [Actual] Cut and paste images for thousands of press releases!

1996: John Bellany: New Monoprints @ Flowers Graphics

2002: Flowers Opening Party @ Flowers East

Very early East London gallery, Richmond Road in the 90s is not the lovely row of terraced houses overlooking London fields that it is now. Then they moved to Kingsland Rd.

2002: Launch of Haunch of Venison

This gallery began in Haunch of Venison Yard in 2002, it was sold to Christie’s in 2007, and now is situated behind the Royal Academy, a huge space for a commercial gallery.

 

 

Atlantis @ Brick Lane

The only space we knew of previously was the Whitechapel site; have not been in the art game long enough. Turns out at it was housed in the Old Truman Brewery. So you go buy 10 more things than you intended, chill on the bridge relieving that bank balance stress with that promised cup of free coffee. Spiritual home? Atlantis is back at Brick Lane albeit round the back.

Social States 

Pump House Gallery

Going along with the theme, we've chosen this week’s ‘opening of the week’ because it is an amazing space. So on Tuesday from 6 until 8.30pm the Pump House Gallery is having an exhibition opening for Social States, artists, Baptist Coelho and Nadia Kaabi-Linke. Its set in 200-acre parkland and sits on a lake. Some political art and these settings, you can’t go amiss.

Wilkinson gallery is situated at 50-58, Vyner Street, London, E2 9DQ. It's founder Anthony Wilkinson has collected private view cards since the mid 90s.
