Africa Rising Festival. Royal Albert Hall. London.

Today I stumbled across the images of Ozwald Boateng's catwalk show at the recent Afirica Rising festival....

If you didn't hear about it, this was the last installment of a larger international tour that included support from the likes of Jay-Z, Mary J Blige, Christina Aguilera and many more.

But what was this all in aid of? Well in a nutshell this worldwide series of fashion & music events is intended to raise awareness of African issues by finding "sustainable solutions" to the continents deep rooted problems.

All very well and good but after reading the review of the event in the Independent a few valid questions were brought to my attention....

"...."sustainable solutions"......What that means is anyone's guess. You'd expect plans for affirmative action in more conservative settings, rather than with designers and musicians flaunting their wares to inspire power to the people. And it's not as if collection buckets are being passed around, either."

So the question is......

Is all this song and dance actually doing anything to help Africa?
OR
Is this just another over rated bit of PR that makes everyone involved feel good about themselves?

Thoughts.....

Man i cant see how all this helps. How many of the audience were from Africa?

These stars have got money we all know that, why arent they just sending the cash out without all the media coverage.

'Yeh, thanks Ozwald i'm so going to buy your suits now'.

I dont know who's gaining more out of this, the celebs or the suffering. i bet my top dollar it isnt the latter.

C'mon guys do some real good

I'm tired of all these lets help Africa bullshit gimmicks...how are they gonna solve the deep rooted problems???these deep rooted problems that were created by the artificial boundaries drawn by the colonists...to produce these "countries" who now cannot support themselves economically despite the fact that the continent is one with natural wealth....why don't they instead of singing and strutting on catwalks try to talk to the IMF and WORLD BANK...and try to use their celebrity status to negotiate the conditions of the loans that cripple most of these countries....or better yet try to convince the US government that their aid programmes in AIDS/HIV should not be conditional in only supporting abstainence only programmes. as abstainence will not combat the plague that's ravaging many of the sub saharan African countries....Sustainability means alot of things including allowing democracy to flourish, it means taking a stand as an international community to actively stop genocide, it means allowing the African Union to try to become a cohesive force and make a real committed, supported effort to fix their continent, it means really supporting the efforts that make trade fair, so these countries have a fighting chance at competing in the global economy. So if the singing and strutting gets any of this started i'm all for it.till then..........

i agree with midwest connection
i guess the media has gone round in a cricle and have arrived at their favorite cause which is Africa...
may I see Mr Powell looks like a twat & The Independent have not done their ebst to get a message across...
so...how is the money going to get to ''Africa'' which is often thought of as a country and what will the song be about...the stars trying to save the world...Just overall confusion in the world-gosh!
